Re: [CHICKENS-101] bad shipped eggs

Yes, Lee, you should write a book about raising chickens.  You need to put in a big chapter on patience as you seem to have some.  A chapter on common sense would be good also, because few of us have any.  Good to see you on board.  The small Georgia town that I live in and surrounding area is full of chicken people and we get together about once a month just to talk chicken, learn, and of course trade chickens.  Oh, and we eat a lot also.  Great group of peeps. We recently had a Chickens on Parade event at a local feed store and had over 200 people come by to learn about chickens.  Great day!  All part of the Atlanta Backyard Poultry Meetup Group, which you can also join.  Do you know about the Chicken Whisperer?  He has a daily computer radio program for one thing.    Susan in Conyers, GA

I buy a lot of stuff for my radio hobby on e-bay and have only been stung twice on over 600 purchases. I must admit I look for signs of trouble and stay away from those offerings. So far, I don't have any chickens but I've been reading a lot on all the egg disasters on many of these reflectors. It appears there are more crooks involved with eggs. Maybe because it would be harder to prove the seller sold a bad product and not as described. If I would have guessed, I would have thought the opposite would be true. That is, lots of very honest sellers. Being an outsider "looking in," I think some people owning chickens have "visions of grandeur". Just my opinion. I do however notice a bunch of really nice people on the reflector too. (Women are sure more emotional about things then the men and there sure are a lot of women into chickens).

Awhile back, I wrote a few keepers near my home and told them I was new to all this and would like to get together with them regarding getting started and maybe just observe their operation. It was interesting getting responses back from those people. What was amazing to me is not one person invited me over to "talk chicken's" or even meet for a cup of coffee or lunch at a convenient place. (I would have paid for the lunch). One of these persons also sells hatching eggs and not chicks and she apparently thinks she is the chicken queen in Texas. Guess where I never will buy eggs once I need them, which will probably be next year.

I really appreciate being a member of this reflector and others, and I have learned a lot just by reading and observing what goes on in these reflectors and magazines. My comments are from a new guy into all this. Do you all think I am ready to write a book on keeping chickens?
