Good afternoon ,
I have 10 hens. They are all about 1 year old. I am away at a wedding in
Florida.
Therefore, I am not at home to see to my birds first hand. My brother
called and said one of my egg laying Welsumers had died - 2 days ago.
Today , he called and said I have another SICK bird. This one is a
barred rock or Dominick.Pardon my incorrect spellings.
I feed them organic crushed laying mash, they FREE RANGE, and I have
them a 1 gallon can of scratch each day to kibitz about.
They get typical cooked meat food scraps, I keep a steady diet of
crushed red pepper.
I recently cleaned their coop ( 2 weeks ago) and restocked it entirely
with new pine mulch, a sprinkle of DE ( this has been done often over a
period of 4 years) .
Their water supply is completely clean and it too often gets a few
cloves of garlic thrown.
Today the bird was described as , a bloated chest, then no bloating, and
when he ( my brother ) picked the bird up ( middle of the day) the bird
did not try to run. He also said the bird was drooling clear liquid from
her mouth.
I am very concerned.
Could they be eating something from some where?
Could they be getting snake bit while free ranging ?
Could they have a disease ?
I welcome any and all questions, answers and advice.
I will attempt to post a photo of the bird here shortly.
Smiles.
Marilyn
There are no other animals in the same pasture. I do have 3 goats in
another pasture, they seem just fine.
