Re: [CHICKENS-101] Help! Mites

I would treat them with ivermectin, ASAP.  I have the pour-on type they sell for cattle.  The instructions I found online for chickens say:

"You will want to fill a syringe with a needle with a little ivomec.  I use a 3cc syringe and 25g needle.  You will NOT inject it - I use the needle to make one drop at a time of a uniform sized drop.  (I'm not able to do that with a regular dropper while holding a chicken.)  I hold the syringe pointing towards its side, not down at the bird, in case she jumps so I don't poke her."  {Note: I actually used wire cutters to snip the tip off the needle to make it less sharp, so if I did accidentally poke the chicken, it wouldn't penetrate the skin.}

"I find a spot on the bird, about 1/2" wide, that has no feathering and no down.  The best area is low on the back of the neck, or between the shoulders.  Once I find that spot, I dispense 1 to 8 drops on the skin.  If you get it on the down, it absorbs and you don't know whether or not the bird will get it - so make sure it's on the skin.

The dosage is as follows:

1 drop for a small or OEGB sized bantam.
2 drops for a large OEGB, small but not "micro" bantam.
3 drops for a regular bantam hen.
4 drops for an average hen or smaller large fowl rooster.
5 drops for the average large fowl
6 drops for a larger large fowl
7 drops for giant breed"

You also need to paint their roost and coop with something that will kill/suffocate the mites that are living in the pores of the wood.  I've heard of using creosote or motor oil, I think.  Hopefully someone else will pipe up on that.

Act fast, and good luck!

A couple of my girls have been acting odd and I've just figured out why--they are crawling with mites, little black ones that get on my arms when I gather the eggs. The girls having trouble have poop caked on their rears and are pretty sluggish--I am really worried.

I cleaned the coop and dusted with diatomaceous earth but clearly it's not enough. Please help, I am not sure what to do with the girls, they seem like they are getting worse. A storm is coming , so the rain isn't going to help, either. I have some sevin powder I can use as well--it's old, butI don't know if it goes bad or not.

Please help--I need step by step instructions on what to do. My other seven girls seem ok at the moment. I don't want to handle them too much until I know exactly what to do 'cause the mites bite me too! FRom the description online, they seem to be the northern poultry mites
thanks!
