Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Double Yolk Eggs & Citrus

Ruth, Wow!!!  Your predators give new meaning to the word predator!   Flat out scary.  I didn't even realize that Florida had enough room left to have panthers and bears running around. double .

We're in the southwest of Florida. No snow here, however, we did have snow flurries in 1975. We've had frost 4 times so far this month. I was giving the chickens warm oatmeal in the mornings, when it was below 40. But, after reading posts, decided to give it to them at bedtime now, when it's going to be so cold. They love it.

I've offered my chickens star fruit and pineapple, but they didn't care for either. They love watermelon.

As for chicken colors ... I'm not so good at what the colors are yet. I would tell you I have black, brown & white silkies. However, I think it's actually black, blue, partridge and white. As for the Polish ... I have one white & black (splash) hen and 2 roosters ... have no clue what their color is called. Both are mostly black. But then, they have gold streaks, green and blue streaks, and some white streaks too. Got all of them as chicks. They're about 9-10 months old now.

Our current pens are 8 ft. by 28 ft., divided into 4, and 6 ft. high. In each pen is a coop that they can be locked in at nite. There's wire & tarps over the pens. Then, the pens open to a chicken run about 18 ft. x 28 ft. It's not covered. I only let one group out at a time. Then, that opens to a dog run maybe 75 ft. by 75 ft. When the weather's nice and no hawks in sight, I've been letting the chickens in the dog run about an hour a day, while the dogs are inside. But, yesterday one jumped into the dog run, while the dogs were out. Fortunately, hubby was close enough and got the dogs, and I got the chicken back where she belonged. Today I clipped everyone's right wing. Well, all but the rooster, cause I want him to be able to defend his girls.

We have panthers, bears, raccoons, possums, and armadillos in the area. 5 months ago we woke up to our Americana rooster dead and missing his head. Very disturbing. He wasn't in a cage. We suspect it was a coon that got his head. Our replacement rooster gets locked up with the girls every nite. The panthers and bears just pass thru the area on occasion. The past 1-2 weeks hawks have been around the area, so I don't let them out of their pens unless I'm out with them.
