I don't think you're doing anything wrong! We are also fortunate to get day old bread from our local "gourmet" bakery. Our chickens get layer feed, they free range on pasture all day, they get vegetable kitchen scraps and bread. If they've stopped laying it's probably because it's cold and dark out. Even if you put lights on them, their laying will slow down when the weather gets cold. Keep in mind, your hens are not "industrial egg layers" like the ones in factory farms. Some of our hens stopped laying in October, and we won't get another egg from them till spring. Once yours are settled into their new digs, they will probably start laying, again if you are keeping the lights on.
