Re: [CHICKENS-101] alfalfa & bedding pellets

If the pellets need to be de-pelleted (is that a word??) it's worked best for me to open the top of the bag and pour in a gallon or two of hot water. Let it sit for an hour or two, then dump it (sometimes have to slice the bag open since it expands so much). Yes,. it will be very slightly damp, but once spread out, it dries fast, even when it's cold. I did find that a different brand of pellet may take a little more/less water.

With the horses, I just let the moisture of the urine and manure, plus the horse walking around on them, break down the pellets. They simply didn't break down at all with the chickens--so if I need any in the coop, they do have to be wetted. The chickens love to dust in the de-pelleted stuff--they go in the hose stalls to do so, since I rarely use it in the coop.
