Re: [CHICKENS-101] Chicken laying boxes

Chickens are flock animals, and it's a very strong instinct.
They like to be together in a group.  Some more than others, but it's a very important facet of their personalities.  They will all go inside together in the evening, it's the flocking instinct again.  Safety in numbers.  Even the ones who think they are free souls won't actually be very far away.  And that very strong desire to be together is why they share nestboxes.

Makes me laugh to see them argue over it, drive each other out to get their turn, try to fit in all at once, then all share a different couple of spots the next week.

Sort of like people, if you think about it.

Amused,
Diane S.

My coop has 6 nice laying boxes. They all (5) like using the same place. I tried getting them to use other nests and they move back and forth, but for the most part use the same nest. Is this normal?

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Silkies for Sale

Elizabeth,
sorry to hear about your friend's husband being ill. Hope he gets
better soon. I have one of Cathryn's Silkies, and Cathryn's Silkie was
Best of Show in 2006 (?? Cath, is that correct??) and she (Pouf) is done
with being a foster mamma, although Milkweed does pretty good as a
foster parent. We like the old girl (Ms. Pouf de la Poof), and she will
be glad when I get the last of this years' pullets outside.

Milkweed is a TSC purchase that has five toes and featherless legs, but
he is great for fostering chicks, and I hope to transfer him, Pouf and
my Serama family of five into a bigger cage, where they can all pile up
together when it gets cold, or should we have another spell where the
all the furnace can do is to keep at 56 degrees. Our last winter was
brutal, to say the least.

Hope things go better for you and your hubby health-wise.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Chickens gone wild

Deb and all,

Actually you were of help and I will just keep prodding along. I have set them up a shelter/coop over in their area with food, water and sometimes bread treats. I know they are using it some and am now at the point where I am going to start inching it back out in to the open. The other chickens don't hardly pay any attention to them, although they did when they first arrived and were in a steel cae for a few days. They haven't been around long enough to get names like all the others, so time will tell. Yesterday evening I was able to get a photo album started on my web site and if you or everyone were go to http://mcgillan.us, you would be able to view some pictures.

Hey Patrick~  I finally got around to this.  I know what you are dealing with  with these wild girls. My daughter Melissa and I call that "The fear gene" when we see it in our chickens. We have pretty much bred that fear gene out of our Modern games, but we see it in new chickens that we get from the hatchery. Sometimes you can 'reason' with these creatures, and sometimes you just flat out can't. That fear gene takes over and it's all over.  We have tried so many things. Holding them, carrying them around all day, giving them treats, putting chamomile tea in their water...separating them so they don't frighten the other chickens...oh man. Sometimes we can make a little progress, but the minute you make a 'false move', like tripping or something, all your weeks of work is lost and they are completely wild again. The worst thing about these wild ones is that they do scare the other chickens and they tell the others to be very afraid of you too!  If it doesn't bother you, I wouldn't worry about it and just let them work it out.  For US, it does bother us since every chicken we have here is a dear sweet darling pet. We usually re-home our wild ones to homes that just want chickens for eggs.
 Sorry I wasn't more help!

[CHICKENS-101] friend

Elizabeth,
I am seriously sorry your friend Linda's husband is ill.  I am interested and am dire need of purchasing new show bloodlines to add to my aging flocks, especially good cockerels and roosters.  I am willing to purchase older silkies too and I heat my main barn to 40+ when temps drop down to the teens and below, and run heat lamps in the others.
I have 4 barns and spread my silkies out so they  all have outdoor pens, plenty of room, by colors.  Plus I plant/raise extra vegetables and fruits for my silkies, down to mulberry trees that plop fruit into their outdoor pens.  I will call her today.  I am looking for quality splash, black, blue, white, buff roosters and cockerels, and a pullet or hen to with each if possible.  I am going to take her number with me to my parents when I go to mow; I mow and up keep their acreage, and help out where I can so they can stay in their home.  If you speak with Linda, My cell is 810 853 2085.
Also, in the future, if Linda wants silkies again, hers will be bred to my best, and she can get silkies from me anytime.  I love my silkies so much and the thought of being able to add to my flocks would be a blessing.
Thank you so much!

Group,

Can someone please identify this type of chicken?

She is a hen that's is laying, so I think she is full grown which would put her in the Bantam size range.

Thank you
