Greetings all...

Just wanted to send a note about Grandma's birthday. She insisted that
we not do a big celebration. So Gary, Dan, Phyllis and Linda went to
Gladys' cafeteria and had lunch with her. The group in the cafeteria
all sang Happy Birthday and many people gave Gladys birthday cards.
Windmill Point staff gave Gladys a lovely flower bouquet -- it was not a
$10 bouquet from HyVee. They don't routinely give flowers like that
for birthdays. I guess if you turn 105 you get a flower bouquet. :-)
Gary collected some lovely flowers from the yard. Peonys (sp?) smell
heavenly -- at least to me. Dan and Phyllis gave Gladys a purple
corsage. Chuck Maynard sent a cool new blouse which Gladys wore today.
I gave her a loaf of bread from the Mennonite Relief Sale.

There was another lady who had a birthday on May 31. She doesn't get
all the attention that Gladys gets. Nobody can compete with 105. :-)

All in all, a very nice little celebration. Didn't wear her out too
much which is good.

Linda and the zoo.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Fowlfest

I have sponsored cash youth awards for silkies, Brahmas, call ducks, and a couple of others for several years. Why wouldn't it be worth going too?  It's MI poultry club's poultry show.

[CHICKENS-101] Fw: Wheat contamination still unaddressed

No wonder organic, non GMO corn is so expensive, the US has been shipping it to China.  Please read....

Facebook icon Twitter icon Forward icon

Tell Congress and USDA to Stop GE Crop Field Trials!

One year ago today, the USDA announced that unapproved GE wheat was found to have contaminated an Oregon farmer's field. And a year later, we're still waiting for action. Tell Congress and USDA to stop GE crop field trials!

One year ago today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that unapproved, genetically engineered (GE) wheat was found to have contaminated an Oregon farmer's field, halting wheat exports around the country. The experimental GE wheat, known as Roundup Ready, was developed by the Monsanto Company to withstand direct application of the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate).

Yet one year later, we're still waiting for the government to take action.

Thousands of people contacted their Senators and Representatives urging Congress to take action, yet Congress has done nothing. More than 150 farm organizations, food processors, mil-lers, retail companies, bakeries, and seed businesses sent USDA a letter last year calling for improvements in the agency's oversight of trials of experimental GE crops, yet USDA has done nothing.

In fact, USDA has actually continued to allow Monsanto to conduct GE wheat field trials, despite unanswered questions as to how the company's product contaminated Oregon wheat last year.

Tell Congress and the USDA to stop stalling and take action to protect farmers, the environment, and our food supply from GE contamination!

As we've warned for over a decade, contamination is inevitable when irresponsible companies like Monsanto are allowed to experiment with our food supply while USDA is asleep at the wheel.

Sadly, this was not the first case of experimental GE crops escaping from field trials. Past transgenic contamination episodes involving GE corn and GE rice triggered over $1 billion in losses and economic hardship to farmers. China recently rejected huge shipments of contaminated U.S. corn and turned to Brazil instead.

How many times does this have to happen before we finally put a stop to these risky GE field trials?

USDA has a terrible track record overseeing these field trials. Even the USDA's own Inspector General issued a scathing report detailing numerous violations of agency rules in regulating genetically engineered crop field trials. USDA officials did not know the locations of many field trials it was charged with regulating, and did not conduct required inspections of others.

Tell Congress and the USDA to stop open-air field trials of GE crops!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Fwd: Our Chicken tunnel

Your problem is that your chickens have to go in pecking order, and who is the most curious. If the tunnel were wider so your hens could walk 3-4 abreast, they'd accept it quicker than are.  Think about the social hierarchy/pecking order of chickens and a space where they can only walk behind one another.
Higher pecking order chickens can keep lower chickens from exiting and entering too.  While the tunnel is a good idea, it doesn't accommodate their social and flock structure.
That is your problem more than it is something new.

Here's the Chunnel that gets the chickens from the chicken apartment to the outside of the barn. Out that little hole is a fenced chicken yard. I need to take pictures of that. But right now we are waiting for ALL the chickens to go out that hole and into the sunshine. This is the second day and I'd say about 15 at a time will be outside. That's 15 out of 80 chickens. Hopefully tomorrow more will take to the sunshine and fresh air and a nice mowed grass to play on.  Any ideas on how to get them all out there? My plan was to feed less chick crumbles as they get outside more to eat bugs and weeds and stuff.

I wouldn't because of dust and mold; even though the hay is dry, it has been subjected to the humidity of the seasons and deteriorates over time.
