Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Crop Problem - advice please

Hi Cathryn,
I had a trio of silkies back when the only color around was white. I was at a poultry show a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe all the colors they breed them in now. They seemed like calm intelligent chickens back then. I will have to find some poultry breeders in my area and see what they have. I live in central Oklahoma.

Hi Dale, ACV is acidic and if the protozoa is not virulent, the ph change in the water can keep the protozoa at bay if it stays in the water long enough to die (not drank by another bird before the protozoa dies). Have you considered silkies?  Not only are they beautiful but they cannot fly, lay well as long as you pick up eggs on a schedule at least once-twice a day. There are many advantages to non flying chickens that learn their name, can be trained for show, and figure out how to communicate with you. The Wed. when I fed and watered I had silkies scampering to their water dishes to tap on the frozen sections and draw my attention to the ice. If they want their bum sprayed they'll wait by their pen gate for me and or sit on my shoe.  I have them come up to me talking my ear off so I'd pick them up and give them a check over.  I've caught fly strike because they are smart enough to come and tell me. One of my lovely blue roosters came to me and let me know something was wrong and he had it on his chest.(which is odd because I keep mine sprayed.)  Poor guy took a long time to heal up too. You have beauty, non flying, personable, trainable (mine do show circles and have me trained well to do their biding), eggs. plus they love to go broody 2 times a year, and you always have a source of delicious meat because you eat the ugly cockerels.
