I would think that freezing is just getting cold. Don't know about the heart bit, I've been out in the cold every day, and it has been below zero. I just get cold. One gets pretty sluggish and sleepy when one gets way cold.
These are adult chickens, right? I'd use a hatchet. It's over quick for both chicken and person. No need to bleed them out, you're not going to eat these guys who are both sick and full of meds. Just do it and get them out of sight.
Then go cry about it, have a cup of tea and some aspirin, and think about something else.
Remember, they're chickens, not your children.
Those people on the news in W Va with contaminated water have a lot bigger problem.
