RE: [CHICKENS-101] It's the middle of Nov and 59 degrees in Michigan

Kinda funny how this group really got quiet for a while.

It is 47° here today, Northern Ca. (About an hour north of the gate, about 20 miles from the coast on the Russian River), it is clear skies at 10:30AM on Sunday.

I actually have a question somewhat related to the weather, I am told that as the nights get colder, the girls will lay less eggs, True?

Right now I get on average 8 eggs a day from 9 chickens.

On a semi-related note, I was letting the girls out during the day, it seemed the egg count went down, I looked around the yard to see if they were laying on the range, I saw nothing.

One day as my wife was attempting to convince the girls it was time to go back in, she found one straggler in the bushes under a small apple tree, the chicken came out, and my wife found

10 eggs there, well obviously that girl did not lay 10 eggs, so we figured they must have been the ‘missing’ ones, not sure how long they had been there we Googled ‘how to tell if eggs are still good’.

The article said put them in a bowl of cold water, if the sink, they are good, well they all sank, but she was not real sure so she pitched them into the composter. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Amazing that it is so warm in MI the middle of November.  I have been using every warm day to play catch up around the barns and to get ready for winter.  I ordered clear, heavy duty tarps for the back barn garage doors to block wind but allow open doors on sunny winter days, and for around the egg layer pen. Hope my  tarps hurry up and get here.  Wish it wasn't rainy and windy, still have quite a bit to do, and late winter apple trees to check out.  Still cleaning chick barns and pens a few half barrels at a time each day.  I'm having a hard time finding people who want to work and do things the way I need them done. Welfare in MI has spoiled the people without jobs, no one seems to want to work.  Hoping the teens that were at the rental yesterday are still there and want to make cash emptying barrels.
