[CHICKENS-101] Re: Question about guineas

I've raised guinea keats along side chicks and had no real trouble. Also introduced young adults together and adults with no major issues. Only time things might get a little rough is in the spring when the guinea cocks will get a bit testy with the roosters and each other. As long as they aren't penned everyone is fine. If they are penned some of the male guineas are short tempered. Also the guineas seem to rule the feed/water on occasion, especially if they are penned and run out. The guinea cock will guard the feed/water from the chickens until he and his hens are satisfied, then all is back to normal and calm. Such interesting and oddly prehistoric looking birds. I love em and wouldn't want to do without them. Love not having ticks even though we live in the woods. We have 30-40 of them right now. I'm not sure of their lifespan but some of mine will be 5 years old this spring and still seem healthy and spry. I keep mine penned until after they have been laying for a few weeks which helps them to remember where home is. One of their favorite treats (white millett) is a great way to coax them back to their coop/pen when it's time to go to roost. Definately creatures of habbit but I always have a few stubborn stragglers who prefer to go to the trees which sometimes makes them a prime target for night predators especally owls which we have in abondance here.

Occasionally, I will have 5 or 6 that decide they are going to roost in the tree that is in the fenced in area of the chicken yard though. Not much to do about that, but let them stay up there though. Anyway, I love them
