Bring them back to the guy from whom you purchased them and ask for your money back. There is absolutely nothing "normal" or "common" about respiratory illness in chickens. Most importantly - get them off your property ASAP and before you get any other chickens, disinfect the coop they were in.
This is nothing you should even have to deal with. If he were a responsible chicken breeder HE would be the one anxious to find out what is wrong with them. If they need to be treated, tested or put-down, he is the one who should be doing it.
I'm sorry you are having such bad "first experience" with chickens. We've been raising chickens for 5 years now and have about 175 of them. We have NEVER had a chicken become ill or have to be treated for anything (knock wood.) However we purchase all our day-old-chicks from a hatchery and never bring chickens from another flock into ours.
Don't become discouraged about chickens because of this unfortunate start.
