We have three acres of property. The house is on an acre in the middle of the other two. We used to let the chickens roam on two parcels and vegetables on one. We now have all coops, food and water on one parcel - the house parcel in the middle - the vegetables on the other side of the house. There is a fence about 4-1/2 feet high separating the house parcel from the vegetables, we've put about another 3 feet of chicken wire on top of that fence. Same deal on the fence separating the chicken parcel from the house parcel. So the parcel where the house is serves as a buffer zone between the chicken parcel and the vegetable parcel.
We had one bantam chicken who discovered she could walk around the front of the house parcel and squeeze herself through a gate to get into the vegetable garden - we've now secured that access. A couple of others discovered they could go under the deck and come out in the vegetable garden - we put chicken wire all around the bottom of the deck. So far this year we've been good (except for gophers.)
It took several years of various methods before this year - for the first time - we seem to have met with success. For the last several years this was cause for major league explosives between the chicken raiser and the vegetable grower (husband and son.) For the moment all is calm. If you chickens are within sight of your vegetables, fencing in the vegetables is the only solution.
