Re: [CHICKENS-101] guinea question Attn: Susan

Wow, you are gonna have lots of eggs! I have really been a good girl this
spring and haven't added anything YET! I have about 30 with 4 roosters. I have
great neighbors.

I put egg shells in the microwave for a few minutes to dry them out and kill
germs, then run them through a coffee grinder and add it to there feed a couple
of times a week. I have never given mine grit because they are free range and
can pick up stuff from the ground. The crushed egg shell keeps their egg shells
strong and provides them with roughage. I give mine scraps but not very often
and rarely give them bread. Too fattening. Sometimes I take a walk and pick
wild flowers for them. They love it. I do not give them yogurt because it can
cause diarrhea. Mine love plain spaghetti and chase each other all over for it.
I give them 5 grain scratch in the winter and if it is real cold they get hot
oatmeal with their feed in the mornings. So spoiled.

Let's meet at the auction some time in the near future. They actually have a
nice little cafe'. I know where Fort Valley is. Talk soon. Susan

Hi Susan:

We have 11 Red Stars, 11 Black Stars, 5 Barred Rock, 5 Buff Orpington, 5
Black Australorp and 5 Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are 10 weeks old today
and came from Murray McMurray Hatchery. They are all pullets. I don't know
why, but I keep looking at McMurray's catalog at other breeds, and heaven
knows I don't need more chicks. I catch myself at Tractor Supply oogling
the babies, but have to keep telling myself no, no, no. I really wish I'd
gotten a few more that lay white eggs, but I always had it in my mind that
brown eggs are better.

Do you know whether the crushed egg shell will be a substitute for oyster
shell later on, or will they need both? I suppose at about 16 weeks,
they'll have to be put on one or both, since some of these pullets may start
laying at 16-18 weeks. Boy oh Boy! I can't wait to have a fresh egg. Do
Guinea eggs taste the same as chicken eggs?
