We all have to be careful when buying on eBay. I "won" an auction in January for Buff Sussex eggs. Granted it took a few days to pay for them. A simple breakdown in communications. I handle the eBay account, but my wife handles the PayPal. She forgot to make the PayPal payment.
When our eggs arrived from Kansas they were individually bubble wrapped, a layed in a next of a crumpled RH Shumway Seed catalog. the eggs were allowed to roll around in the box. We set them anyway and tossed them all after about 10 days. I set some of our own eggs the same day so I would have a comparison. We later acquired some Buff Sussex eggs from several sources and they all hatched well. We informed the seller of the issue and she only offered to pack how we wanted on our next winning bid. No offer of replacement.
A few weeks ago we sold some Buff Wyandotte Bantam eggs on eBay. Packed them well and included a few extra eggs of Buff Orpington Bantams. We are getting great hatches from of Wyandottes. However, the buyer got zero hatched. Yet, the two Buff Orp Bantam eggs developed (still in the incubator). He claimed no fertility. I disagree. Proof I am right is in my brooder. He agreed to pay shipping only and his replacements are shipped. I know I was right, but was taught by my father the customer is always right. Though I will not replace the replacements. To many variables in shipping eggs. I can not be held responsible for what the post office does.
On another note, I have started something different. I am now offering some Black Orpington hatching eggs for a minimum bid of $100 for a dozen. What is the catch? The winning bidder gets a 2010 Standard of Perfection. On some other auctions I have increased the shipping cost an additional $20. Why? To cover the cost of a Individual Annual Membership in the American Poultry Association. Yes, they could buy direct; but it is so much fun adding the SOP and/or teh APA membership.
You can see all my listings at our website http://jimsfarmstand.bravehost.com/auctions.html
We have had a few broken eggs, but most of ours arrive in excellent condition and hatch well. As both a buyer and a seller of shipped eggs, we understand that the USPS is not a nice place for hatching eggs.
