Hi Deb; Vicks Vapo Rub (?) is medicated, whatever that means, and has a strong camphor smell. It most certainly is not irritating to the skin. Quite the reverse. I don't know why chickens don't seem to like it. Either the taste or the texture but it does work. There are products on the market that may be better such as no-peck, and of course blue-kote. But once chicks start pecking on one individual they can kill it within an hour. Many newbies aren't ready for blood shed and don't have anything on hand and it may be a while before they can get some. So I try to think of what might be on hand. Most medicine cabinets have a jar of a Vicks Product; ('right there in front of you, idiot'.) Another one is Bag-balm, in the green can. Whatever you try make sure it's not red or pink.
