[CHICKENS-101] Re: Unwelcome Guest

Hi Vicki; If you have a chance PBS has an adventure by Willam Lang called "Journey of the Broad-Wing Hawk". http://www.nhptv.org/broadwinged/ It's a fascinating program. This from a guy that has just about given up on finding anything intelligent on TV.
What the program doesn't tell you is the Hawk view chicken coops as "fast food takeout"

[CHICKENS-101] Novice Chicken mama

Hi all, we are new to raising chickens and just brought home 4 new babies today. All different. We have them under a warming light, food and water and shavings. Anything else we need to be aware of?
We have them in a tote for now and at what point do we need to be concerned about moving them? They are in the house for now.
Thanks,
Becky in Graham, WA

If you look on eBay, you'll get a good idea of prices for the various ones.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Help requested for hurt chick Attn: Georgia W.

I'm glad she has another chick for company.  I was shopping recently and looked in the Easter toy section for Chickens.  I found baby chicks with speakers, a little bigger than a baseball and got 2 of them.  They make a very realistic chickie sound, a peeping.   When I've had single baby chicks in the house before I've given them a stuffed toy to be their friend.

Is your greenhouse sturdy?  I have a Nordic Screen House I use as a chicken shelter and I worry it will collapse in a storm some time.  I'll be glad when morning comes tomorrow!  At least the weather radio has been quiet - that thing makes me nervous when it begins talking.  You are only 4 hours away from where we live.  We're 15 miles N of Dothan, AL.

Oh no, she's not outside.  I'm keeping her in a snug little container with
heat lamp in my greenhouse.  I brought her inside the house but she was
peeping so loudly and thrashing around without company, and was not a happy
camper.  She at least settled down with another chick 'next door' to keep
her entertained.  She's one of my Buff Orphington's and next door is a
Barred Rock.  The BR (Rambo) had a bum leg when she arrived, but is getting
around really good the past few days.  I don't know if she was injured
during the trip or just what was wrong with her.  I took her to the Vet a
week ago and he thought it was genetic.  I don't think so now because she's
doing so well.  She will be my most favored baby.  She's such a beautiful
and laid back pullet.  My babies were hatched on the 12th of February and
delivered on Valentine's day.  I got them from Murray McMurray Hatchery in
Iowa and they are all pullets.

Today, I moved 40 babies out to their new home and they are all so happy.
We put up some little perches and boards for playing on and they seemed to
adjust perfectly.  I had about 1/3rd of the house partitioned off for now,
and perhaps will give them about 2/3rd tomorrow or Wednesday.  I just want
to make sure when I open the front door, I don't get a few babies flying out
into their yard.  The fence is 2 X 4" chicken wire, and I'm sure they could
go through that and into the pasture with a horse and goat.  I'd rather not
take any chances with those babes.

Funny, but people who have never had chickens don't know what they are
missing.  They are such fun and so entertaining, not to mention lovable.

Oh!  I'm right south of Macon, Georgia and we are experiencing some really
bad thunderstorms now.  Please watch your weather there in Alabama.  I've
seen where you are having tornado watches.  Take care and have a safe
evening.

Anne

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Unwelcome Guest

Most raptors do not migrate. I answered her first pasot and said it looked like a female Shrap-Shinned hawk. I live in NE Ohio we have them here, in fact I have a pair that come and pick off the birds from my bird-feeders {they have to eat too and they were here first).
I have an old kitchen table on my open front porch that I feed the birds on. One day the female of the pair sat right on the table watching for birds to come to the feeder. They are beautiful birds and I love watching them, even when they are eating the song-birds.

I have never had any of my chickens attacked by the raptors in my area. Mine are kept in pens and if the area is small the hawks and other birds will not even try to go after the chickens. if the pens are large, place a 8-10 foot pole in the middle and run fence wire from the pole to each corner, the raptors will not fly into the pens. Also keeps the domestic birds in.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Incubators cost?

ive had good success with teh little giant. i just regret not buying the egg turner but ive had a good hatch rate almost 90% from it. it took me a few tries and getting used to it but after i did its been all good since. ive hatched about 25 chickens out of it. ive only used it like 4 times or so and only used a dozen at a time or less. its been a yr since i last used it but the school is using it now and the teacher said she like it.

$50 to $1000, depending on what you want.  A reliable
starter incubator is the Hovabator 1588, preset for temperature and very easy to
use.  Add in an automatic turner and you can get the package for about
$200.00.  I use one for hatching :-)

RE: [CHICKENS-101] Help requested for hurt chick Attn: Georgia W.

Hudson (not sure of your name)

Most of us have been there…….trying our best to save a chick……..only to have them take their last breaths in the palm of our hand.  I am not ashamed to say I have cried over many baby chicks………trying so hard to get water and food into them, to no avail.

I know I sound like a killjoy, but please prepare yourself for what very likely will happen.  Once these chicks seem sick, there are usually too far gone to save.

My daughter and I sat together, each with a chick in the palm of our hand, watching their labored breathing until it stopped.  I have toughened up “a bit”.  I say “a bit” because I still cry over certain hens that have died and I know that if my little Modern Game house chicken were to get sick and die, I will very likely sob over her.

I sobbed the first year and told my dh I didn’t think I was meant for farm life, after all.  In the four and half years we have been here, I have gained perspective and now I am overjoyed over the ones that live and subdued over those that succumb.

For your sake and your little chicks, I hope survival is in it’s near future, but if not, trust me when I say many of us have been there and we cry over them, too.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do have a fresh package of Gro-Gel. Thanks for
your advise.

She was acting a little better but still won't eat or drink on her own.
It's storming very badly here and I won't be able to check on her tonight.
I sure hope she's OK in the morning. I'll get out there just as early as
possible. Poor little baby. I'd hate to lose her.
