Shelley, Catahoula's use their long webbed toes and nails like fingers on a hand like the Chinese Crested. (They also use them to climb trees).  (Tracking Florida involves not only looking on the ground but above too.)
                        http://www.bulldoginformation.com/catahoula-leopard.html
And the dog right above the Catahoula on that page would be one of our dogs, a Chinese Crested. ;o)

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: OT: Wisconsin's 200 cows deaths - update

Heather,

Our garden was so prolific last year I should have it tested so I can duplicate it in the future! ;o)

Honestly, like I said earlier in the thread, using our composted horse manure and the tips I've learned over the years have served me well. The only thing that didn't do incredibly well were one type of San Marzano tomatoes, and I'll probably try a different variety/seed supplier for those this year. If everything else works out as well I'll be thrilled.... and I'll be buying more canning supplies!

Hi Dee Dee, We used to live in FL in ST Pete and my MIL still lives in Pasco county (where New Port Richey is) I also used  to be a courier in that area and as long as you don't live in a subdivision (usually newer homes) there shouldn't be a problem. There are a lot of chickens/roosters running around . We hear them in the A.M. and see them cossing the roads. Hope you enjoy FL...

[CHICKENS-101] Clever chicken containment idea

Just got my Mother Earth News in the mail today and in glancing through there was a picture where some folks had wired around the base of their kids trampoline to contain their chickens.

Their's still had the trampoline surface intact, and it had the tall netting to keep people from bouncing off the edge, which would not only provide shade, but deter predators. Not sure what would happen with rain, they are porous, aren't they?

It would work inside a yard as they had it, but wouldn't deter digging critters, but it was easily relocated and would serve as a good daytime run.

I may just post on freecycle to see if anyone has one to give away.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Legality/Obtainability Question

You can get needles and syringes legally at most feed stores. In my area TSC and my local independent mills carry them.

One of my friends paints beautiful spring flowers and such on egg shells; she's dying to get a hold of some of the tiny shells from the eggs my serama girls are laying.

If I had to blow the egg insides outsides, I'd probably pass out. Is there any kind of handy device available to do this so that I can do it without (quite literally) blowing my brains out. I really don't have any brain metter to spare.

Could I get syringes legals from a pharmacy for this purpose?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Georgia's cheekins

We go through this every couple of months, sigh.  He got carried around by his feet for a while, then I tucked him under one arm while I filled waterers.  He thought he'd peck me one more time so I turned him over.  Still under my arm but now head down, feet up.  I'm sure tomorrow he will act like a good boy.

Critters are such a hoot! It sounds like your young boy has more smarts than the other roo! That attacking the one who feeds you is a baaad choice and especially for a roo!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Hi I am a new member

Hi, and welcome to our little group here on the internets!  Now tell us what breed or breeds your 6 chickens are.  And where you plan on getting your spring chicks this year.  Oh, and the brand of incubator you use is required also!    What about returning your grocery cart to the corral?  Oh, never mind that one - wrong list, sorry!

I'm from San Francisco, grew up in Los Molinos, now live in Lower Alabama which is known around these parts as LA.

My chickens are Silkie, Dorking, Orloff, Brabanter, Polish, OEGB and Lakenvelder.
