Sand fleas are totally different than chiggers.  A lot larger and different color.  Chiggers look like tiny poppy seeds.

Intere4sting article... its says Pacific Island chiggers don't bite? Not *MY* experience! Only time I ever encountered them was swimming and on the beach in Hawaii, where they were called "sand fleas" by the Dr. I had to go see they were so miserable. Luckily, all below knees though!
