Cinnamon and niacin allegedly lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and raise HDL cholesterol (the good stuff). Regular exercise also helps to raise HDL cholesterol.
Blood cholesterol is created by eating a combination of fat and carbohydrates. That is why low fat diets (think Dean Ornish) can help to reduce blood cholesterol levels. That is also why low carbohydrate diets (think Robert Atkins) can help to lower cholesterol. HOW the body reacts to fat and carbohydrates is a matter of heredity. The human body will create it's own cholesterol if one's diet does not provide enough.
My mother ate a low fat diet her whole life, but didn't exercise much. She took no cholesterol lowering or blood pressure lowering medications. When she died, her total cholesterol level was 140 - pretty darn good. My stepmother ate a low fat diet her whole life and exercised religiously. Until she went on cholesterol-lowering medication, her total cholesterol was over 300. Both did "the right thing". Only one benefited from it.
My LDL cholesterol dropped 50 points and my HDL cholesterol levels rose 30 points when I followed a strict low carbohydrate diet. Even now, since I follow a modified low carbohydrate diet, my LDL cholesterol is low, my HDL cholesterol is high.
This isn't medical advice, just a voicing of my opinion.
