Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Marek's question...

Cami, I get my chicks playing in dirt and chickweed about 3 weeks of age at least once a week.  This seems to build immunity.  I use areas of the farm yard that have not housed chickens and that adult birds do not have access too.  Now winter is coming I need to go and get bags of dry play sand and put up a bucket of dry soil from along the one side of the cattle barn on the side.  I think it makes a difference.  I do know that since I stopped getting mareks vaccinated chicks I no longer have problems with mareks.  Watch Slim for cocci.  New strains of cocci along with the stress of a move can drag a cockerel down.  I'm breeding for resistance...healthy & happy birdies. When I have my dream coop built, I'll decide then whether I want to start up with a new breed of chicken/duck/guinea/etc. Until then, I'm closed. :)
