Re: [CHICKENS-101] Marek's question...

Cami, Breed for immunity is all you can do.  I'd also clean and clean.  I use tektrol and use it on the soil too.  It has a 7 day residue.  Then lime, sulfur and wood ash the soil, tilling it in, and plant it.  Meanwhile a bit of extra b complex and vitamins with trace minerals will support the birds you have that have been immune so far. Mareks is an opportunist, virulent, virus that can have several strains.  Another reason why you do not bring in new birds with out a 30 day quarantine.  Between the different cocci, mycoplasmas, and viruse strains, it is amazing that our birds survive at all. Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Marek's question...

Hi. As you all know I had a Marek's outbreak last summer. I truly thought we were past it. However, on Monday, my final mixed cockerel Freak began to display neurological symptoms. We chose to put him down immediately as opposed to going through yet another loss after days/weeks of suffering.

Why did every mixed chick from that hatch come down with Marek's while the purebred Polish never missed a beat? My 'adult' Polish were vaccinated for Marek's...of course, the Silkie's weren't. Is this why - the mix of the unvaccinated hen & the vaccinated rooster?

Baloo, my unvaccinated mama Silkie hen is currently taking care of the chicks from the Layer Coop (3 of them). They are very healthy, active, eating/drinking well - doesn't appear to be any problems whatsoever. Same with Baloo.

Ugh!! I'm listening to Cathryn & choosing to not have my hatchery chicks vaccinated from here on out!!
