[CHICKENS-101] Heat affecting fertility rates?

Hello all,

A friend of mine hatched a batch of my eggs earlier this spring and he said he was amazed at how fertile and strong the chicks all came out so last month I gave a batch to my other friend to hatch. We don't know what happened but I only got 2 live chicks and they were really weak. She broke open the eggs and only half were fertile and 4 chicks died during development.

Secondly, I noticed my rooster is not servicing his girls as much as he used to. Some of my girls have slightly bald backs and others are great. He hangs more around the bald ones than the others. There are only 6 or 7 laying hens right now so it is not like he is overloaded. I have also noticed they spend more time just laying in the bushes now that it is low to mid 90s during the day but this is cool compared to how hot it is fixing to get. They also have 2 waterers in the backyard which the ducks get dirty, a kiddie pool, 2 plastic gallon waterers, and a feed pan all around the yard so they have plenty of water available.

Could it be the heat just making them less active or do I need to do something?

Thanks,
Em
