Yes, I had the shots.
Supposed to be 4 the first year, a month apart, then 1 a year after.
I had the first shot-----and my upper arm got all swelled up and red and rashy. So stopped there.
The second year we managed 2 shots.
It took all 4 years to finally get up to 4 shots one spring.
Next year had the 1 booster, which only got a little red. Doctor gave me the package, said to take care of it myself until the next year.
So I did take them for a while, and did not get any more poison ivy. Of course I stayed away from the stuff also.
But like you-----then they took it off the market!!
There was the tiniest bit of the oil in it. What do they call that when you are exposed to it like that? There's a term for it.
I always figured that whoever decided it was "dangerous" never had a full blown case of poison ivy/oat/sumac allergy themselves. Both my older daughters have had rounds with it too. Treated it with prednisone or something, which was almost as bad as the ivy poison. They reacted badly to that also,
Now I have a retarded daughter who does not talk, and so far simply has not ever been exposed to it that we know of. We have over protected her all her life, she's 30. So I don't know if she's allergic or not. I worry about her a lot. Don't believe she has ever been stung by a bee either.

Never "immediate" for me (and I'm very allergic)--but I'd guess it's about the same as you. Of course then there have been the times that I had no idea where or when I got into it!
There's also the kaolin-based creams/ointments that can be rubbed into the skin BEFORE exposure--for instance, when you know you have to pull the stuff, or those who have to work on power lines, tree work, etc., that may be covered with vines. The urushiol oil soaks into the kaolin, and is washed off when you wash the cream off--thus giving you more time before you react, way more than the 20 minutes mentioned before.
Anyone else ever have the allergy shots for poison ivy? I did when I was about 14--one a week for 10 weeks. Felt like a tetanus shot, and since I passed out after the first one (the doctor caught me on the way down!) they made me lie down for 20 min. or so after the others. But it was worth it, I had little trouble for about 20 years, and only "normal" reaction for another 10. When it got serious again, I called the doctor to see about getting the shots again--and wouldn't you know, it had been removed from the market only the year before because it was "dangerous." Compared to what PI does to me, the shots were way preferable...
