Re: [CHICKENS-101] New to ducks

Ducks are messier and stinkier than chickens.  One thing I am glad I didn't do was to put a kiddie swimming pool inside the shed.  It is bad enough that I need to redo the floor in there.  The ducks and the head rooster get along swimmingly (just had to say that), because the head rooster was raised up with a Khaki Campbell duck, and they were best buds until Rumor got killed.

Hope you didn't get Muscovy ducks - they can be pretty aggressive to the chickens and other ducks they live with.  I had a cute little half Mallard, half Muscovy girl, Twee, who was really sweet.  A coon killed her and I went over to the dark side and helped kill the coon.  Twee was my baby.

Now I got two males that are dumb as foxes, that I kind of now wished I had not adopted.  They are about six years old.  Ducks can live about anywhere, and eat just about anything chickens eat, DO NOT FEED MEDICATED FEED TO DUCKS - THEY CAN OVERDOSE ON IT AND GET SICK AND/OR DIE.  Unlike chickens, ducks gobble up their food as quickly as they can, while chickens pick and peck.  Hope that helps, Em.

Mine just sleep on the floor in the house with some of the chickens. She has a nest area she likes to hide eggs. They free range during the day with the chickens. My other set sleeps in another house with a different bunch of chickens. I never bothered making them anything special and they seem to do just fine.
If you have babies and decided to brooder them yourself, be prepared. They stink a lot worse than chickens. And the mess has almost caused a separation. lol
