Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: [Chickens101] rooster temperment

< posturing and in an aggressive stance?>>

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered that... One of ours last year got so we kept collections of sticks at every door (barn and house) to grab before going anywhere outside. And he was cagey, too--he knew to wait until you'd got a little away from him, thought you'd got by and *then* he'd come for you again, from behind. (He died of acute lead poisoning...)

I can't even imagine trying to get hold of him. I handled him some when he was younger, but once they graduated to outdoors I had no chance. The last time I touched him (with hands, that is) was the first night after we moved the coop-on-wheels the first time--he was one of those who couldn't remember the new location, so I had to pick him off a branch after dark. Quite an experience--I thought I "had" him securely round the body, but very quickly was holding just one leg as he screamed and thrashed--I tossed him into the coop and that was that. Never again.

I do miss having a rooster, though. Other than the attacks.
