There used to be a tale around that Gen. George Patton liked to shoot horses (he was, of course, not only a crack shot, but an expert horseman and lover of horses)... The truth of the matter was that he had once seen a horse put down and the job bungled--apparently it took several shots, and the horse did not go quickly. From that point on, he apparently decided that if he was ever around when a horse had to be destroyed, *he* would insist on doing the job--and did so, in at least a couple of cases.

The reason for this seemingly non-poultry story is that when any of us takes in an animal, there is responsibility. Usually the extreme to that responsibility is making the decision to have the animal put down, if necessary, usually by a vet--but it's worth remembering that at some point, it may be up to us. The best we can do is know at least one way to do it--and at least with poultry, we have the "luxury" of several methods. (Yes, I do know how and where to shoot a horse. I hope I never have to, but I also hope I have the courage to deal with it if necessary.)
