Dr. Doug,
Personally, I keep a DE dusting tray in the coop for my girls, line their nesting boxes with DE under the shavings, and sprinkle my yard with DE after each grass cutting. With 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 6 chickens living a very rural area, I have no ticks, fleas, mites, or lice. Even ants leave after an application of DE to the yard.
In my house, I sprinkle DE around the baseboards and sprinkle in the dog beds. Once a month, I sprinkle DE in the cat and dog food as a dewormer.
The only word of caution that I would offer is to be sure to use a food grade DE. There is a different grade of DE that is used in pool filters. You do not want that grade as it probably is dangerous to animals.
I purchase my DE from Wolf Creek Ranch. Here's the website: http://www.wolfcreekranch.net/ They have a lot of in-depth information about DE on their website and plenty of printed material to purchase. Check it out for yourself and see what you think.
Hope this is helpful.

Peggy,
I was told by several sources the DE was very bad for chickens' respiratory system, and could suffocate them easily.
