I've always wondered why nature makes chickens molt when it's the coldest part of year. When one of my hens molted recently I went down to the coop at night and placed her in the middle of the roost line so she could keep warm between the other hens. She would stand in the sun to get warm during the day. But this is Alabama and it wasn't colder than 28 during her molt. At 16, I would bring her in for protection. Some people may think it's okay to take the risk, but I probably wouldn't. What about a chicken sweater?
