Wouldn't you know, I'm going to have to be away a few days and this morning there was a weasel making trouble. I was snow-blowing, saw a hen flopping around in the snow, went to look, and the weasel popped up from underneath her. He ran (under one of the cars, kept popping out between car and drifted snow) and I rescued the chicken, who didn't really seem hurt, just very much shell-shocked. Lots of feathers around, a couple of tiny specks of blood in the snow, nothing else I could see on her. I put her down in the barn with the horses, where she stood huddled next to the water tap for at least an hour or so. I haven't gotten a full count (will when they go to bed tonight) but this afternoon all look bright-eyed and tailfeathers are up.
At least the dooryard and paths are clear now, so the chickens have somewhere to run. I *think* the coop is well secured, but I've warned the folks who are going to collect eggs for me not to be upset if they find a dead one, or worse.
Signing off until we get back...
