They pierce the wing of the chicks with an ID band that clamps around the bend in their wing.  Used for tracking.  I'm guessing, and it's only a guess, that these chicks were wing banded because they could grow with them on into adulthood.  I assume the operation wouldn't want to individually capture thousands of chickens to put leg bands on them when their legs got big enough.  These birds must be parent birds for a hatchery.  I wish the woman I've been working with would put me in touch with her daughter so I can ask all these questions directly.
