A bobcat is reasonably unlikely to attack a human, unless it's cornered or perhaps had cubs in the immediate vicinity. Bobcat and lynx are relatively shy, and black bear would rather disappear than confront as well--making a little noise is a good idea when I'm out away from the house in the dark.
The eastern coyotes do work in packs (thanks to their wolf genetics) but they have stayed shy. Although I'm careful, the only danger I was ever in was from a pack of feral dogs (someone had dropped them as half-grown pups). I was riding, and they went for the horse--trying to hamstring her. Fortunately I'd worked hounds off her, and she was fearless, so we just rode them down until the dogs ended up scattered to the four winds (and I carried a hunting whip until the dogs were eliminated--I'm pretty accurate with that, too...)
We do have guns--it's a good thing out here in the country. <g> I was the first girl anywhere in the area to take the Hunter Safety course, and I remember a couple of the boys had noses severely out of joint when I had a much better score on the range than they did! I'd been shooting to some degree with my older brother for quite a few years--first just tagging along, later actually shooting--mostly woodchuck and porcupine (we actually got a little pocket money out of the latter, since there was a 50-cent bounty due to the timber damage they cause). I really should get back in practice and see if I can get a deer.
Right at the moment, though, yeah, we're both carrying sticks--because of the bl**dy rooster!
