Re: [CHICKENS-101] Pullets laying?

Hi Valerie,
It depends on the breed and the birds. I received day-old chicks on May 3rd so, about the same time that you did, and mine are just starting to lay now. The roosters do mount them, and they do not take long up there. lol The hens may also start showing more interest in the nesting boxes. If you haven't switched them from Grow Mash/Crumble to Lay Mash/Crumble/Pellets it's a good time to do it as they will need the extra calcium. Due to the fading light some hens may not lay until the spring.

Hope that helps.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Pullets laying?

We have two pullets and two cockerels that were hatched May 12th. We haven't gotten any eggs yet. The other day I noticed the lead roo was on the back of one of the pullets. Now I am new to chickens and in particular, roos, so I don't know how long it takes for them to do their job up there. He was not up there very long. Anyway, my question is this, does his attempting to mount mean that the pullets are getting close to laying?
