Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Respiratory problem - please help! Gape? MG? Cholera? Update

Tetroxy is tetracyline - couldn't remember the name brand. CRD caused by MG is the most common poultry disease and your rooster's symptoms match. There is absolutely no way to diagnose your chicken without expensive testing, we can only go on symptoms. MG most likely came with your chickens from the hatchery; the majority of hatcheries will not give mycoplasma free NPIP helath certificates, I know I tried to find mycoplasma free hatcheries.  I did not ask you to cull him. I emailed you quite awhile ago when he was first sick and recommended that you add tylan200 to your rooster's Tetroxy. You do with him as you wish including medication. I do know the longer his illness goes on the less chance that he will ever recover. Mycoplasmas hide isndie cell parts, not just inside cells.

He never wrote back but I don't have either tetracycline or tylan. I only have the tetroxy. I'd have to order anything other than that type of antibiotic up here. And the tylan is $50! Yikes! If it is MG, I read that you can or even should contact someone in your area for a blood test for confirmation. I also heard that someone up here in VT was able to get a guy from the Ag department to come and look at their sick chicken. Albeit he wore shoes that he never cleaned between visits to farms(!) So is there a way you can easily and cheaply confirm this diagnosis? I won't cull this guy unless I know it absolutely has to be done. All of my hens except the 4 mo old pullet are old (over 4). It's not like I'm getting tons of eggs here or relying on these girls to produce. They are simply pets and the occasional eggs are a bonus.
