Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Newbie with some questions

Chrissie, Non Slip Barn lime, (crushed limestone) is 2.99 per 50lbs at Tractor Supply Company. It will work well in dropping pans and you can sort thru it with a cat pooper scooper to get the chicken droppings out. It's what I use in a thick layer on the floor of my barns, doesn't make the caustic dust of hydrolyzed lime, and is way cheaper.
Your chicken with the bare breast maybe having her new feahers eaten off as they grow in for the blood/protein in the feather. Try adding a bit of cheap puppy food to their feed 2-3 times a week.

Thank you Laura. I don't know if we can get PDZ, but the place I buy my layers pellets from is primarily a seller of horse food, straw, saddlery and just about everything to do with horses. I will phone them tomorrow and see if they can suggest a product that would eliminate chicken odour.

Do you think the bare breast on the one chicken is caused my hen-pecking? I have today pressure-washed their whole coup (nesting box, perches, integral run) and sprayed with some stuff that is meant to get rid of any mites, but if it were mites I'd have thought all three chickens would be affected.

Best wishes

Chrissie
