RE: [CHICKENS-101] Re: chicken poll

a.) what kind of chickens do you have? A few of our orig bantams-Americaunas, Barred Cochin, Rosecomb.  MANY Barred Rocks, White Rocks, a few Leghorns, three Light Brahmas, three Delawares, Speckled Sussex, a few Polish, a NHRed roo, Silkies, Modern Game, OEG, MANY Guineas, Four turkeys.

b.) do you keep them for meat? eggs? both? strictly entertainment? Eggs and entertainment, mostly.  We have had some roosters “processed” that are currently in the freezer. The turkeys are for eggs, also……….unless the tom becomes a butthead.  While eggs are certainly CHEAPER at the grocery store, it gives me great pleasure to know my girls have a good life and are happy, healthy hens.  It also is abundantly clear that our farm fresh eggs from our free ranged hens taste better and are more nutritious, with less cholesterol, too! (USDA says so)

c.) where do you live (what state, province, country)? Sposylvania, Virginia.  We are the southernmost county considered northern VA……..although I associate with more of the central VA counties these days.

d.) why did you chose this type chicken? Wanted an assortment for a rainbow of colored eggs and chickens that can be trusted when families with children visit and want to walk through the barnyard.  I sell eggs to friends and family to help offset the expenses of raising chickens.  I also sold chicks and pullets this year and will do that again, next year.  I am hoping to hatch turkeys, as well.
