Any way that's funny about John Boy and Maggie. It happens though. Boy named Sue? Haha
When I was a teen a local farmer gave us three kittens he said were all females. We didn't check, just took his word for it. Peach kitten named Princess Buttercup (thankfully a girl), cream one named Soda Pop (people thought was a boy was a girl), and long haired red fluffy beauty of a cat named Fancy (turned out to be a boy). Oops. My dad begged me to change his name but yes he answered to it, the name stuck. He lived a long life, but never did like my dad guess he felt disrespected. Lol

Off topic but your hen that got named JohnBoy is a bit like my cat that was named Maggie when it was a kitten. Only problem was that By the time we realized she was actually a he, the name was stuck on the poor critter, and was all he would answer to. Got a lot of strange looks when folks said, oh what a beautiful tom, whats his name? and I said Maggie. LOL, One man actually took offense, and said who the **** ever heard of a tom called Maggie?
