We have a few that like to fly over the fence. We section their yard
into 2 parts by moving a few lengths of chain link fencing so we can
plant grass in one side while they play in the other side. The Blue
Andalusians and Black Minorca's like to fly up on that divider fence and
get into the off-limits side. They never go outside the fenced
perimeter but I guess they could since they can fly from one side to the
other. It's almost like they are thumbing their noses at the rest of
the chickens. Needless to say, they eat lots of the grass seed before
it has a chance to germinate. Lol. They always go back to the other
chickens before time to go up for the night.
I have thought about clipping wings and if they ever start going outside
the main fence, we probably will.
Just a little side story about egg eaters. We've known for a while that
we have at least one chicken that's eating eggs but with 36 it's hard to
tell which one it is. The other day, I found one of the white Leghorns
standing in a nest box eyeing a broken egg in the adjacent box. She had
dribbles of egg yolk on her breast feathers and beak. I picked her up
to put her in one of the tractors to keep her away from the other
chickens. She was less than thrilled about being picked up. DS, Chris
started petting her on the head and said "It's okay, it's really ok.
You're going to be dinner". I laughed so hard I almost dropped the
chicken. :-)
