Depending on how big of an area and just how "deep" it is I would just throw down straw or chips over the area... but for a real deep- long lasting mud hole I would do something like suggested below with soil stabalizing fabric and stone...
The area at our chicken-run gate only gets sloppy after a cpl days rain.. so I throw down mulch or straw about once a year

We have a wicked mud season in Upstate NY and the way to fix mud for good is to put down some soil stabilization fabric (like they use on roads/driveways) and then top it with any kind of stone. We did that under all our horse and sheep gates and it works for years, and is well worth the effort. No fabric and your rock sinks into the mud over time. A hardware store might have a door-sized scrap hanging around they'd be happy to give you.
