Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Egg Production

Ginny, Your chickens should be ok with deep bedding and good food since there are no drafts.  When it gets cold I add a bit of grain at night with grit on handin a separate dish for those who need and want it.  If you have chickens with bigger combs and/or pointed combs I would add a heat lamp if temps in the coop fall to 10 degrees or lower just in case they get cold and can't get warmed up.  I used to use large pie and coffee cake pans from Gordon's Food Service, & cover up the heat lamp by running the plug and cord thru the pan, then over the heat lamp. I hang the heat lamp under/middle of the roosting area at night when it's the coldest.  Many chickens do fine without heat.  I would get heater base so you do not have frozen water and hang a night light for the shyer/lower pecking order chickens so they can eat at anytime if you do not use a heat lamp.
