Oh now I realize why so many of you worry about the cold. I had an inspector on my property and they never said a word so I guess I am good. But that is why my girls are so protected.
Is there a logical reason for them to force you to make your birds live that far away? What difference does it make to them? Is it an odor problem? because I only have a few birds so that is not a problem either.
BYW.. New Jersey is expecting a snow storm tomorrow, I doubt they are right!!!

Ro, Our codes would never let us put a chicken coop near our homes. They have to be back away. I am grandfathered in at 50 ft. I do put a tarp over the back garage door and an extra piece of plywood in front of the other back door, and at the corners where the wind hits the most to keep the wind from directly hitting the building.

When I made my coop I put it right up against the house in the back, the wind blows past in most of the time and never directly at the coop. The house also radiates some heat so I never really need to heat it I also keep it well stocked with good have or straw and there are very little drafts.
My worry about heaters in places that are not extremely cold is that they come out of the nice warm coop at night into the extreme cold of the day. Just a thought
