Re: [CHICKENS-101] How long broody?

Good idea to put her in a cage of her own with her eggs.  Did you candle any of the eggs to see if they were viable? Do you have a rooster?  Last spring one of my bantam hens sat on eggs for 27 days before they hatched.  I thought about tossing them out several times but I am glad I didn't.  She hatched 4 cute little chicks out of 6 eggs.  If your eggs don't hatch just toss them and start over.  Susan in Conyers

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] How long broody?

How long will a hen remain broody without eggs? Lilly is my only
broody hen (so far). Back in late June she started sitting on eggs.
That didn't work out and for 3 weeks now she's been out of her cage
and every day I come home and find her sitting on some eggs. I hear
her squawk before I see her and I pick her up and collect the eggs.
At this point I'm willing to let her have eggs again just to satisfy
her. I told hubby to clean out her cage today and depending on how
many eggs we have, I may place her in her cage with fresh eggs and
allow her to have her way. My biggest concern is that she'll decide
partway through she's had enough and abandon the eggs.
