Re: [CHICKENS-101] Mama hen and babies question

Thanks.  That's what I was thinking last night.  Because we have had a problem
coon this summer I put her and the babies and the nest in a big plastic
container and brought them in the house last night.  Wanted to see what would
happen next and protect the two tiny chicks.  This morning she has the eggs and
the chicks under her and made a loud warning noise when I went into the room to
check on her. The chicks are eating and drinking and "talking" to mom.  If the
eggs haven't hatched in a couple more days I will toss them. This Serama hen is
a terrific mom!  This is her second hatch.

When I opened the back door to the porch last night to let our chihuahua out she
attacked the dog and came into the house chasing her!   Had to do a little
intervention and calm down the shaking dog!

If she has left the nest with chicks, she is probably pretty sure that the
remaining eggs won't hatch. The babies peep inside the eggs for a day or so
before they hatch. When eggs have hatched and no more peeping comes from the
remaining eggs, the mom will leave the nest with the babies to seek food. I
would let her take care of the babies and discard the remaining eggs after
checking to be sure that they show no signs of hatching, such as peeping or
holes in the eggs.
