Re: [CHICKENS-101] Guinea and Chick question attn: Susan

Hi Susan:

Thank you for the reply.  I'm glad you mentioned about the scratch feed.  Yes!  I've been giving them about a quart+ twice a day.  I'll stop that immediately.

There are 21 Keets and I could probably get another pen or something to put them out in a cooler place during the day.  I made a 5' X 8' brooder using the greenhouse tables.  There is plenty of ventilation, but it's so dang hot.  I'm south of Macon and I know how high the temps go.  We are sure starting off mighty early this year.  Went from freezing to hot, hot, hot almost overnight.  Guess we'd better prepare for this week-end and next week.  AccuWeather has a heat warning.  Yikes!  I wonder if a 9' X 12' X 6' would be sufficient for the Keets?  We could rig up something so the coons couldn't get to them.

Thanks again,

Anne H.

Do you have an outdoor cage/pen you can put them in?  It is very important to have cross venitlation, even more so than keeping the temp down.  It was 100 degrees here in north Georgia today and the hens were not happy.  Even with shade trees and 2 covered areas in the run, they had their wings open to get air under them.   I also put ice cubes in their water in the morning and let it melt down all day.  Don't give them corn/scratch since it will heat them up internally.    Good luck, looks like it is going to be a very hot summer.    Susan
