Hi Jenny: I find your request very interesting. Here in New England the practice of "Tar & Feathering" has all but died out. However the preferred feathers were from the RIR (Rhode Island Red) breed. This was due to the fact that they were plentiful and wore well especially is bad weather. For a more dramatic effect Black Australorp were sometimes used. With the shimmering effect of the black feathers they were outstanding on sunny days. Usually reserve for Tax collectors or Government officials. I understand they are scarce due to being collected by Tea Party folks for some reason. The Barred Rock was another favorite. The black and white motif was very popular for scoundrels and the like. I would stay from the lighter breeds. The feathers just don't stay in place and require someone to clean up the mess. Silkie feathers are a definite no-no. They tend to get all stuck up in the tar and don't present a proper image. Game birds are another breed not recommended, the feathers tend to run.
