Red is used to reduce cannibalism and feather picking. Orange red stimulates reproduction, blue green growth. I use red and white heat lamp bulbs. It's less stressful on the chickens if the extra lighting comes on in the morning and the chickens go to bed with dusk. Here is an article. about chromaticity, wavelength, duration, and intensity.Cathryn

Years ago I did a ton of research on color effects on animals before choosing the color of "night"light to put up in their shelters...........and later, chicken coop as well. Red was the one color advised to stay away from because it had an "exciting" effect on them.......whether it was infuriation-'excitement'
(think about bulls), or other stimulation-'excitement'.
Consequently, I have a green (blue works too) floodlight bulb to keep my chickens warm at night but not keep them up & awake or "excite" them in any way. Way cheaper to run than a heat-lamp and seems to work just as well.
