They are EASY. Take a nipple waterer, if it's a push in type, push it through the bottom of a soda bottle or milk carton, hang it up, tap it a few times and check it every few days. If it's a screw in type, drill an appropriately sized hole in the bottom of a bucket, screw it in (I used teflon tape on the threads just in case), hang it up, fill it up, tap it a few times so the birds get annoyed and peck at it and check it every few days :-)
NONE of my birds had problem learning to use it, even my sweet Silkies :-) I love the clean, fresh water, no poop, no dirt, no dirt, it's awesome! I did put lids on all of my buckets, but made sure to drill a few vent holes in the top to prevent a vacuum :-)
