How to raise Backyard Chickens: [CHICKENS-101] My shipment of chicks.........:-(

I ordered the 25 pack of Asst Rainbow Layers and 5 Naked Necks….all females. They shipped the 30 plus an extra Naked neck and two bonus chicks.

Well, two were dead when they arrived and seven more have died. Four look like they are dying ………this really sucks.

Here I thought I was pretty experienced and this would be a breeze. This is our fourth shipment in three years, after all. Well, I am feeling very inadequate and sad for these sweet chicks I cannot save.

I have to call the hatchery tomorrow morning to give them the final count. I haven’t decided if I am going to replace them or have them credit my account. I really wanted those chicks, but if they replace them, they will put males in as fillers and I don’t want the males………..I ended up with 17 roosters one year and I am not doing that again!

I think the cold weather is too much for them. Also, I had them vaccinated for Marek’s and Coccidia. Does anyone think that could also cause the higher mortality?
