This is, of course, a personal choice, but there is HW disease in Ca. Here's a map that shows it is certainly less than other parts of the country, but it's there.
A good friend of mine is a Vet who went to work in the High Desert area a few years ago, and she was very surprised to find a significant number of cases. She had thought there would be few cases because of the dry climate. She felt that having come from Florida, she was more aware of the possibility, and was concerned that testing was not a part of a yearly exam. Her thought was that more might be found if there was more testing.
The first case of HW I saw was in Connecticut in 1972. The dogs' name was Daisy, and at that time, the treatment was arsenic. I only worked there a short time (high school work experience) and I don't know if she survived. I do know it made a big impression on me (as did the necropsy on the collie with a heart full of worms), and for the minor cost and minmal risk, I have always had my dogs on preventative.
